Due to continuing concerns about COVID-19, we unfortunately had to decide to cancel the physical conference at the University of Cologne, but will instead hold a fully virtual annual conference. We look forward to the new challenges and opportunities of bringing together presenters of the research papers, experts on the core topic of gender economics, colleagues and interested listeners for the first time on a virtual conference platform. Even though we will miss the personal encounter, there will still be the possibility to talk and network via chat rooms.

Conference registration will still be required for all attendees and speakers. We consider the current circumstances as an opportunity to innovate an engaging virtual conference that will be rewarding for both presenters and attendees. We plan to livestream our keynotes and sessions that we anticipate having the most conversation around. All participants must register for VfS Annual Conference to gain access to the virtual meeting rooms. Only individuals with confirmed registration will be able to view presentations.

By participating in the conference you agree to the use of the digital infrastructure (conference platform) and the associated online webinar software.

 

Open Meeting:

Call for papers on all economic topics is now closed.

The Annual Conference of the Verein fuer Socialpolitik consists of an Open Meeting with mixed topics and of a core conference with invited lectures concerning “Gender Economics”. Presentations and Organised Sessions for the Open Meeting may be submitted from all fields of economics.

The submissions are evaluated by anonymous referees and subsequently selected by the Programme Committee. The decision of acceptance may be expected during by the end of June 2020. Membership in the Verein fuer Socialpolitik and acceptance of its Code of Ethics are required for presenting at the annual conference. After the acceptance of the submission, applications for membership can be made here.

With approval during the submission process, accepted contributions will be published in EconStor, the online publication database of the ZBW – Leibniz Information Center Economy which is a part of the collection of all VfS conference contributions. Further publication is not intended by the Verein fuer Socialpolitik.

Core Conference 2020:

Gender differences are pervasive across all economic contexts. Wages and career paths differ strongly between men and women. Their choices and preferences differ, too. A large set of recent  studies has set out to explore the causes and consequences of such gender differences. What is the effect of institutions such as tax regimes and childcare facilities on the labor market outcomes of men and women? What roles do social norms and gender stereotypes play? How do choices and outcomes within the household interact with choices and outcomes in the market? What policies are effective in enhancing the professional success of women?

Three keynotes by leading international scholars will provide insights into these questions and give an overview of current research.  Raquel Fernandez (New York University) will present a macroeconomic perspective on gender issues, including cultural effects and gender norms. Muriel Niederle (Stanford University) is an expert on behavioral causes of gender differences and will analyze how institutional settings can moderate their effects. Manuel Bagues (Warwick) will discuss a body of work on the consequences of gender quotas for economic outcomes. A panel discussion with politicians, entrepreneurs, and researchers will ask what measures are effective in achieving gender equality.
