The Johann Heinrich von Thünen Lecture has been an integral part of the Annual Conferences of the Verein für Socialpolitik since 1986.

Johann Heinrich von Thünen (1783 - 1850) was a German agricultural and economic scientist and social reformer from Mecklenburg. His model of agricultural land use, known as the ‘Thünen Rings’, is an example of early economic geography models. Other works dealt with the ‘natural labour wage’, among other things. He is one of the pioneers of the use of the marginal principle to solve economic optimisation problems.

An invitation to give the Thünen Lecture honours exceptionally deserving members of the Verein für Socialpolitik and people who have made outstanding contributions to economics in German-speaking countries. The topic of the lecture is determined by the lecturer(s).
