Carl Menger Award 2022

Every two years, the Verein für Socialpolitik (VfS) awards the Carl Menger Prize for innovative international research achievements in the fields of monetary macroeconomics, monetary policy, and currency policy at its Annual Meeting.

The Carl Menger Prize, named after the Austrian economist and co-founder of the Austrian School, is jointly endowed by the Deutsche Bundesbank, the Oesterreichische Nationalbank and the Swiss National Bank and carries a purse of €20,000.

The Carl Menger Prize winner for 2022 is Ricardo Reis (London School of Economics and Political Science). Reis is one of the most respected macroeconomists in Europe. His research on understanding price rigidities, inflation dynamics, and the sustainability of public finances is groundbreaking. Through his contributions, he shapes the dialogue between researchers and the public and, as a valued advisor, actively participates in economic policy debates at home and abroad.

Reis is a Portuguese economist. He received his PhD from Harvard University, conducted research at Columbia University for eight years, and returned to his alma mater, the London School of Economics, in 2016. He has been and continues to be an associate editor of the most prestigious international journals such as the American Economic Review, the American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics, and the Journal of Monetary Economics. Rice is an academic advisor to numerous central banks and institutions. He has won several awards for top economists, including the "Bernácer Prize" for the best European economists under 40 and the "Yrjö Jahnsson Award" of the European Economics Association.

The Carl Menger Prize was awarded by Thomas J. Jordan, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Swiss National Bank, on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at 6 p.m., during the VfS Annual Meeting at the Basel Stadtcasino.
